Nottingham sign Samoan International
Current Samoan second row and former captain, Filipo Levi (32) has signed a contract with Nottingham Rugby for the remainder of the season.

Levi, a 6’5” second row from Huntly, New Zealand, represented Samoa at the last two World Cups, coming on as a substitute against Fiji in New Zealand. He has 24 international caps for Samoa and a further five for the Pacific Islanders.

Levi, who grew up in New Zealand, and played for Otago and The Highlanders, became ineligible for the All Blacks and Super 15 rugby once he was capped by Samoa in 2007. He subsequently headed to Japan, before signing for Welsh side, The Ospreys in 2009. This was followed by a spell at Newcastle Falcons where he remained until last season.

Nottingham’s Director of Rugby, Glenn Delaney commented:

“We are delighted with the signing of Filipo Levi. He is a very experienced player, having played in two World Cups, The Premiership, Magners League and Super 12 (now Super 15) for the Highlanders. He brings further experience and physicality to the squad and will be a great asset to the club.”

Levi is awaiting clearance of his visa application, but is expected to join up with the Green and Whites later this month. He will be joining former Newcastle teammate Brent Wilson at Nottingham, as the board commits further cash resources to strengthen the squad.

Delaney added:

“With the extra budget available, it enables us to create a squad with strength in depth and competition for places. We have a lot of games in the season and to be in with a chance when it comes to the play offs and cup knockout, we need more high quality players. In recent years the teams that have managed to keep everyone fit and those with larger squads have succeeded and we need to create that here at Nottingham.”

Nottingham were in action against Pontypridd in the Cup last weekend and after trailing 17-3 at the break, scored 17 unanswered points in the second half, including an injury time drop goal from full back James Stokes to seal the win.

The Green and Whites are back in league action this weekend, with a Friday night match against Plymouth. Wins in their next two home games will likely see Nottingham climb the table as they push for a place in the end of season play-offs and a chance at promotion to the Premiership.
